Large stoneware bowl with thick white ash glaze by Conny Walther

This high fired stoneware bowl with a thick glossy runny ash glaze was made by Danish potter Conny Walther (born 1931). It was made in the early 1960s. Its ash glaze was made from either burnt oak, birch or simply hay.  Throughout her career Conny signed her work in various ways. It has been painted, engraved and stamped. This particular bowl has her hand painted signature on the bottom. Conny Walther began her career at Saxbo Pottery in 1948. She was there only a year before she began studying at the Arts and Crafts School in Copenhagen from 1949-1951. After graduating she worked at Kähler Ceramics in Næstved for a few years. In 1952 she opened her own studio in Birkerød just north of Copenhagen with her then husband, artist Bent Stubbe Teglbjerg. He would sometimes decorate her works and has likely been involved with the making of this bowl. Conny Walther has been exhibited from Tokyo over Paris to Chicago. W. 28 cm. (11”) H. 17 cm. (6,7”)
